UNO AKA PICKLES

Uno came to live with us in the spring of 2020. We were out blowing leaves in the community when our neighbors asked if we could help them out. They were looking for a home for a dog who had been surrendered at a groomer’s. We said YES and took him in the very next day.
It took Uno a little while to get used to living with a pack of dogs since he came from a one-dog family, but he has since melded right into the pack. Jesse, our son, started calling him Pickles for some unknown reason, and it stuck!
Uno likes to bellow at anything that moves outside that he thinks shouldn’t be there. He loves to chase his tail and bark at it, which, of course, sets the rest of the pack off. He’s also a true food hound and can sniff out a crumb a mile away!
Uno enjoys going for bike rides with us, but walking him is another story. He’ll happily walk as long as we’re heading in a new direction. The moment we turn around to go back home, Uno decides he doesn’t want to go and has to be coaxed along. He would much rather keep walking and exploring new territory!
MADDY

We had seen Maddy (Mama) and Emma (Baby) posted as a pair on a Facebook page called Rescue Me WV at the end of May 2023, shortly before our sweet pug passed away. Fast forward a month, and sadly, our 17-year-old pug, Muffin, died. While we were still grieving, we knew we wanted to save another life.
We drove to Animal Control in another county and asked if they had any younger pups. They showed us a young dog but told us that her mother had to go with her. I immediately recognized them as the same two dogs I had seen posted on Facebook the month before!
We reached out to Rescue Me WV after realizing they had previously posted Maddy and Emma. Rescue Me WV was able to spring both of them that same day and have them spayed the following day. We picked them up on June 30, 2023, and fostered them for 21 days before officially adopting them both.
Their story continues under Emma’s name…
Maddy is at the top of our pack. She rules the roost and makes sure everyone else stays in line! She’s quite helpful at times and loves joining us on cycling and kayaking trips.
POPEYE

We found this cutie through Pawssible Beginnings Rescue after seeing a post on Facebook. His owner didn’t want him because he didn’t get along with his cats, so he let him out the door. Somehow, the pup’s eye was badly damaged and eventually needed to be removed. When his owner was located, he wanted the pup euthanized because of the damaged eye.
Pawssible Beginnings Rescue scooped him up and posted on Facebook asking for donations to help pay for his eye surgery. Our heartstrings tugged. We reached out and told them we would pay for the surgery and adopt him.
And, believe it or not, his name was already Popeye!
Popeye has become my sidekick and wants to be wherever I am. He loves going cycling and kayaking with us. He and Tucker play constantly—to the point that we sometimes have to tell Popeye that Tucker needs a break!
Popeye has also been known to lie on me when I’m in pain, as do several of our other dogs. Sometimes I’ll have Popeye, Tucker, Maddy, and Emma all piled on my lap, putting their body heat and pressure right where I’m hurting. They seem to know when they’re needed.
EMMA

Maddy and Emma’s story is a very sad one with a very happy ending.
Evidently, during the last week of May 2023, their owner was arrested and left his girlfriend in charge of the dogs while he served his time. The girlfriend took off with his valuables and left the dogs locked inside the trailer where they lived with no food or water for five days.
When the landlord went to begin the process of moving the trailer, he heard dogs barking frantically inside. Police and Animal Control were called, and they were able to get the dogs out safely. Their owner was contacted and surrendered them to Animal Control.
Rescue Me WV heard about Maddy and Emma and posted about them shortly afterward. That’s how their story eventually crossed paths with ours, and we ended up adopting them both.
Despite everything she went through, Emma is an absolute sweetheart—and she is a HUGGER! I’ve never had another dog who will come sit beside you, put her head on your shoulder, and actually hug you. She does it frequently. Emma is incredibly sweet and loves showing how much she loves you with plenty of hugs and kisses.
TUCKER

Tucker came to us at just three months old after we saw him on the Morgan County West Virginia Animal Control Facebook page—AGAIN!
We had first seen a post about nine puppies on May 31, 2024. They had been surrendered to Morgan County WV Animal Control, and fortunately, all of them initially found homes. Tucker was later returned because the home where he was being fostered was also caring for dogs with medical needs, and Tucker was doing what puppies do best—annoying the other dogs!
Another post went up looking for a foster-to-adopt home, and we decided to take on Tucker, bringing our pack up to six dogs. He fit in very well and quickly proved to be a hoot.
Tucker is another lover of a dog. He seems to express care and concern when someone is hurting. When I broke my toe, Tucker would lie at my feet and put his head right on top of my foot, providing warmth.
He’s also full of energy and sometimes doesn’t quite know what to do with all of it, so we play ball to help wear him out. Popeye does his part, too, by chasing Tucker around the yard. Those two can certainly keep each other busy!
RIP AKA RIPLEY

On November 14, 2024, we received a phone call from Rescue Me WV asking if we could be an emergency foster for a returned dog. We, of course, couldn’t say no, and Rip was dropped off the very next day.
Back in 2022, Rip had been surrendered along with his mother and siblings to Morgan County Animal Control, and Rescue Me WV took them on. Homes were found for all of the puppies and their mother. Fast forward two years, and Rip’s adoptive owner decided to surrender him for various reasons.
When Rip came to us, he was extremely anxious and had some healing wounds from a dog fight that had taken place in his previous home. He was also very skinny, very skittish, and afraid to be left alone.
Rip was only supposed to be a temporary foster while Rescue Me WV looked for another permanent home for him. Well…that didn’t last long! It only took a few days for us to bond with him, and we just couldn’t give him up. We officially adopted Rip on November 25, 2024.
Rip is still anxious at times, but a good belly rub can help ease his worries. He also loves chasing a ball around the backyard and will happily entertain himself with it for quite a while. Rip came to us as an emergency foster, but it didn’t take long for him to become part of the family.
MICKEY

Amanda inherited the desire to save pups and decided to rescue Mickey from a pet store. She does not know Mickey’s full story, but he was in a small cage and looked very depressed. He looked so pitiful and sad that Amanda scooped him up and brought him home.
She had missed the company of Peanut and decided to get a smaller dog that would be more accustomed to apartment living. Mickey was excited to be out of the small cage. When Amanda later moved to a house, Mickey was even happier!
When Barxmore Acres was formed, Amanda volunteered to become part of our mission and later became a member of our Board of Directors. As Amanda’s rescued dogs, Mickey and Bubba are part of our extended Barxmore Acres family and are featured here along with our sanctuary dogs. When resources are available, Barxmore Acres also helps support their care by providing donated food, toys, and other supplies.
BUBBA

Amanda literally rescued Bubba from her next-door neighbors. He was just a baby, and she frequently saw him left outside on the porch at night, as well as during hot and cold weather, without water or adequate shelter. He would sit at the door and cry.
Once Bubba figured out how to escape from the porch, he would sometimes end up running into the street. Because his owners didn’t speak English, Amanda used a translator app and spent several months trying to communicate with them. She would also leave water out for Bubba when he appeared thirsty and returned him home numerous times after finding him in the street.
Eventually, when his owners were preparing to move and couldn’t take Bubba with them, they surrendered him to Amanda. He finally had a safe home of his own.
Bubba is a very emotional little dog and doesn’t like being alone. He has bonded closely with Mickey and loves playing with Mickey’s toys—and his own! Amanda’s daughter also helps with the care of both dogs.
As Amanda’s rescued dog, Bubba is part of our extended Barxmore Acres family. When resources are available, Barxmore Acres helps support the care of Amanda’s rescued dogs by providing donated food, toys, and other supplies.
